I was finally back photographing the KL International Jazz Festival 2014 at University Malaya. This popular music event made its debut at the leading public university in Malaysia last year. The event has grown bigger this year with many more sponsors and performances from both local and international artists.
I was attending this event as more of a guest than a working photographer, hence the coverage of only two performances at the Experimental Theatre; the UM Big Band and that of David Tughan, the UK Jazz singer who performed his session of “Chetting: A Tribute to Chet Baker”.
David Tughan was performing along side world renowned American Jazz pianist Kirk Lightsey who had done some recordings with Chet Baker back in the good old days. I actually had the pleasure of shaking Kirk’s hand while on stage before the performance and still not knowing who he was!
The Dean of UM Cultural Centre, Dr. Mohd Nasir Hashim was present to conduct his orchestra, the UM Big Band which was comprised of staff and students from UM.
Mohammed Rauzan Alwi, or Roy as he is commonly known locally, started with his goose bumps-inducing rendition of “Cry Me a River”.
David Tughan also joined in later with a couple of great selections from Frank Sinatra.
