Summer Fair 2019 at BSKL

Heralding mid year festivities with the arrival of the Summer Fair at the British International School, KL. There were lots of fun and games, items on sale and a variety of food to be sampled throughout this half day event. The scale of outdoor activities prepared for the children were simply mind-blowing, exciting and just fun to look at!

It has always been a refreshing experience photographing such events deemed a huge departure from the usual commercial and editorial works. Event photography never fails to keep one thinking on one’s feet, with all the fast-paced events that unfold. Certainly calls for a balance between fast response time in the candid expressions department and simply photo documenting the many colours and more mundane happenings.

BSKL Sports, Music and Leadership Group Poses

Yet another round of photo shoot using flash-lit, ambience-balanced photography and special group poses methods for these various groups of people from the British International School of Kuala Lumpur. These shots were done over a couple of days given the different schedule we have to adhere to in the event of meetings, exams and competitions throughout the school calendar year.

These are all strobe-lit and ambience-balanced shots, particularly tailored to the high demands and standards of the British International School. They were taken between Nov 2017 and May 2018.

Sports and Music Group Photography for BSKL

It’s been two years since I last undertook the Sports and Music group photography of the British International School of Kuala Lumpur. Back then, I had very limited time for the group photography. Two years later, the shooting schedule has been streamlined somewhat, many thanks to all the necessary experience, preparation and logistical arrangements that went into this year’s shoot.

Working alongside one assistant, we cycled through the many groups of students over a two and a half days shoot. The locations for the group photography varied between the theatre, library, secondary gym and the astro turf. It was a tough schedule but we managed to pull it off successfully.

The brief was simple. Anything, but the usual style of group photos. The poses have to be dynamic, energetic, fluid and interesting, with a play at shapes and forms of the highly diverse line up of students. I only had about from as little as 10-15 minutes (small group) to 25-40 minutes (larger group) to pose the students.

Of course, working with older students were much easier than with the younger ones. Nevertheless, given a firm stance and slight tone of seriousness to command respect in view of the interest of time often helped put us back on track. But overall, I was very pleased with all of the co-operative students.
