Killing two birds with one stone: an indoor graduation and family photography session done in the studio. Having just graduated; a quick, simple but useful corporate profile shot would have been helpful too. All in the mix. Nice and neat.
I’ve had the privilege to photograph the newly launched Gardasil 9 HPV vaccine for MSD Malaysia.
It’s been two years since I last undertook the Sports and Music group photography of the British International School of Kuala Lumpur. Back then, I had very limited time for the group photography. Two years later, the shooting schedule has been streamlined somewhat, many thanks to all the necessary experience, preparation and logistical arrangements that went into this year’s shoot.
Working alongside one assistant, we cycled through the many groups of students over a two and a half days shoot. The locations for the group photography varied between the theatre, library, secondary gym and the astro turf. It was a tough schedule but we managed to pull it off successfully.
The brief was simple. Anything, but the usual style of group photos. The poses have to be dynamic, energetic, fluid and interesting, with a play at shapes and forms of the highly diverse line up of students. I only had about from as little as 10-15 minutes (small group) to 25-40 minutes (larger group) to pose the students.
Of course, working with older students were much easier than with the younger ones. Nevertheless, given a firm stance and slight tone of seriousness to command respect in view of the interest of time often helped put us back on track. But overall, I was very pleased with all of the co-operative students.
It’s been two years since I last photographed the British International School to produce a set of high quality images to be used for their marketing purposes. The last photo shoot was undertaken with a focus on the secondary school. This round calls for a focus on the primary and pre-school levels.
This photo shoot with the help of an assistant was done in one day. I used a mixture of ambient-only and off-camera speed light flashes. The mode of operation was a simple observe, coax, mould and glide from scene to scene as discreetly as possible. Strangely, it’s easy to bring a camera into a child’s personal space without them feeling awkward. Thus, it’s been a pleasure capturing all the candid expressions seen here.

Baby Koven is barely a year old. I don’t suppose he’s warmed up to me yet judging by the cold hard stares he threw at me. Regardless, I was pretty sure we had some good ground covered during this baby photo shoot session at my studio.
